Also known as the "Golden city", Salamanca has been the protagonist of Spain's most significant historical events related with culture and art. With a population of approximately 156.000 inhabitants, it is located in the Midwest of Spain (Castilla y Leon region). Its talkative and kind people speak Castilian, the purest Spanish, which makes this city very popular to learn our language.
Salamanca was named the Europeam Cultural Capital in 2002. Innumerable historical figures, from Fray Luis de León and Miguel de Unamuno, have spent time in the town, at both the University and in the Arts community, leaving their mark of knowledge on this beautiful city. Salamanca is home to the world's second oldest University (1215 AD). It is a real university town where 30% of the population are students, and it is easy to get in touch with local students.
In the field of Arts, many styles have left an exquisite mark on this town. The Spanish "platersca" style, of decorative quality and fine execution, offers its most beautiful examples in Salamanca.
Recognizable by an extreme attention to sculptural ornamentation and details, the sandstone Old and New Cathedrals, "La Casa de las Conchas" and a host of Romanesque churches are unmatched by any other European city. Its Plaza Mayor is one of the prettiest Baroque squares in Spain.
Although it is a medium size city, it offers all the qualities of being a big town (friendly atmosphere, kind people, warm hospitality and a surprising and exciting nightlife). Salamanca is a must! A 2002 Spanish magazine survey cited Salamanca as the second most attractive and safe city in Spain.
